Companies such as Nike, Gap and Toms have all seen major success with their loyal customers, who seek out their company logo. These companies continued to grow enormously, earning billions of dollars; companies are scrambling to find ways to outsource their manufacturing, hoping to make more and more profits. Profit is not the only thing that is increasing, many questions and investigations have taken place, revealing the poor ethical choices made by these companies. Nike, one of the most well-known and profitable companies, has faced this scrutiny firsthand. Throughout this essay, the reader will gain a better understanding of Nike's poor ethical business decisions and the steps they took to repair their image. In 1965, two men named Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports, now known as Nike. , the company almost instantly became a top competitor. In 2012, Nike had a net worth of $67 billion and its co-founder Phil Knight had a net worth of $18.7 billion. The amount of profits made by Nike is eye-opening, which made individuals even more furious when they discovered that Nike was accused of having sweatshops internationally. The accusations began in 1991 when activist Jeff Ballinger published a report documenting the harsh conditions under which workers were forced to work. Recognizing the fact that Nike's business plan was more about making profits than treating employees with dignity. Nike's strategy seemed to be to enter poor countries where people were desperate for work.
