Essay / Andreas Veslius - 691
Andreas Vesalius is very interesting. He had a very exciting career and was able to make many earth-shattering discoveries in the anatomical field. To publish his discoveries, Andreas Vesalius published numerous books which were read, copied and reread until almost every scientist around the world knew of his discoveries. These publications and discoveries helped Andreas gain much recognition in the scientific revolution. Andreas Vesalius was born on December 31, 1514 in Brussels, Habsburg Netherlands (part of modern Belgium) to Anne van Hamme and Andreas Vesalius (his father). He was born into a family of many physicians, two of whom (his father and grandfather) were royal physicians to the Holy Roman Emperor. When Andreas was a child he loved dissecting animals and his interest grew when he entered the University of Paris in 1533. There he was trained by Johannes Quinterus and Jacobus Sylvius and his interest in dissection reached a high point when his teachers and classmates strongly wanted him to publicly dissect animals and explain what their parts were for. After a while, Andreas went to Venice and then to Padua where he obtained his medical degree. He was then appointed professor at the University of Padua. As a professor, Andreas personally dissected the bodies and talked about them, unlike other professors of the time who read chapters from Galen's book while a surgeon dissected them. He later discovered that some of Galen's observations were false and he concluded that Galen had never dissected a human body but had dissected apes and other human-like animals. Later in his life he was appointed imperial physician to Emperor Charles V as were his father and grandfather...... middle of paper ......ilages, ligaments and muscles, veins and arteries , nerves, organs, organs associated with the heart and brain. This book was not only written to describe the body, but also to point out Galen's errors. Another publication of Andreas is the Letter of Venesection. This is a letter that explains that if someone is experiencing side pain, it may be due to a cut in the auxiliary vein in the right elbow. In the letter he says the only way to stop the pain is to draw blood from the site of the pain. The purpose of this book is that he can support his arguments from the venous system and not from his books. Another publication of Andreas is the Epistle on the Chinese Root. In it, he describes an herbal medicine capable of curing gout, syphilis and stones. This work is another that tells about the mistakes made by Galen and a response to criticism..
