  • Essay / Dehumanization - 1050

In this novel, one thing I noticed about Conrad's writing is that never in this story was a person fully described. Even the stars of the story, Kurtz and Marlow, have not been fully described. Conrad does this because he wants to show us that the characters in this story have human qualities. This act of dehumanization in the novel shows us that the men in the story are so blinded by their greed that they are not considered fully human; they lost themselves in desire and longing. In the short story, I think the Africans, the Pilgrims, the Europeans and Kurtz are seen as a whole. Of course, this book is about the darkness of imperialism. There will inevitably be derogatory comments about the country and the colonized people. In the story, we can certainly say that neither Conrad nor Marlow had a high opinion of Africa. We see Marlow describing the African with animalistic descriptions. He says: "While I was standing, struck with horror, one of these creatures got up... and got down on all fours... and after a while, dropped its woolly coat" (* *). This quote shows me that Marlow saw them as animals. By connecting a person to an animal, you remove the human being in them. In the book, Marlow also says, “Sad, but true. And these guys also had no ears, they reason out of any scruple” (**). All the Europeans, including Marlow, think that the cannibal or the African have no real reason to be a problem. They think that their thoughts are not more important than themselves. It is our brain that separates people from animals, so when I think that someone's opinions or thoughts are not important, I really treat them unlike a person but rather like an animal. These quotes are proof of the methods of dehumanization that Conrad uses towards Africans. However, Conrad doesn't...... middle of paper ......ngs and through lies so there's no point in living, because that's not the case. not an honest life. There is nothing sure and you live in a world of doubt. You may be wondering what this quote has to do with dehumanization? Conrad says that we all lead meaningless lives, that our way of life is similar to that of animals. I think this quote sums up what Conrad is trying to tell us. This sums up the purpose of his writing this book. Dehumanization is very present in this short story. Conrad describes his characters using animal or physical descriptions. Throughout this story, almost every character, including Marlow, lacks something human about them. This makes me feel uncompassionate towards the characters. Conrad does this on purpose because he feels like they have been so blinded by the greed within them that they are losing a part of themselves..
