Essay / Argumentative Essay on Pearl Harbor - 793
It's a beautiful sunny morning, on a tropical island where everyone would like to take a vacation. It was around 6 a.m. on December 7, 1941, when a first group of 181 kamikaze planes attacked; target major naval bases stationed in Hawaii; a sustained paralysis of American naval forces for approximately 6 months. The death toll stands at 2,500. Of the 9 battleships, 8 were heavily damaged by the assault on Pearl Harbor and of the 8, three were beyond repair, the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma and the USS Utah. 160 planes were put out of service and almost 130 were seriously damaged. This was the first incident in which an act of war was committed on American soil, outside of the American Revolution and the Civil War. The world was at war and the United States remained neutral until now. Before the attack, the United States was engaged in a great debate over whether to enter the war or stay out. The act of war forced the United States into war and sparked a controversial debate over whether to retaliate against Japan using nuclear weapons. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the event that made the United States decide to become involved in the war. After this incident, the United States was looking for a way to retaliate and counterattack against Japan. Some thought the only way to do this was to use atomic bombs. People like General Dwight Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, and a group of scientists believed that using the bomb would do good and ultimately end everything. Eisenhower believed that since the use of the atomic bomb had been successful in New Mexico, it would also be successful in Japan. Harry S. Truman believed that even though the atomic bomb was the most destructive weapon in world history, it could become the most useful. He stated that "it was... in the middle of paper... that's fine with me." In my opinion, after gathering as much information as possible, I believe that the use of the atomic bomb is impractical and a waste of time, money and lives. If I were President of the United States, I could have made the decision not to use the atomic bomb against Japan. Using this weapon would only open the door to more destruction. After dropping that bomb, I don't think it would have ended the war. This probably would have ended WWII, but I think it would have created more wars to come. The people, probably the Japanese, would have wanted revenge and found a way to fight back. They would attempt to create a more dangerous weapon of destruction that would allow them to fight back and destroy. As president, I would have liked to prevent this. And in the best interest of my country, I would have made the decision to keep this nuclear weapon out of war..
