    The first attempt was to build a large hotel. The slogan “if you build it, they will come” did not pan out for Flint. Very few people came. The second attempt was an indoor amusement park, Autoworld. The park was designed to resemble Flint's old, thriving downtown. Again, very few came. Like the hotel, it was forced to close. The third attempt was more of an act of desperation. The city built a new, larger jail. Crime had become so widespread that the old prison was overcrowded. The new prison was used as a fundraiser the day before it was occupied by inmates. The prison was treated like a hotel and someone could pay to spend the night in a prison cell. The new prison, once operational, provided some former factory workers with a heated indoor room, a hot meal and a good night's sleep. Some unemployed people turned to crime because they seemed to “have no other choice.” Like the City, these were acts of desperation. Former workers turned to despair. They had tried everything they knew. Some former workers took to raising rabbits, selling them as pets, or skinning and dressing them to sell the meat as food and save the fur to tan them later, hoping to earn money. money.
