Learning English for some is a necessity, for some it is a passion and for others it is like no other option. English is the lingua franca and is necessary in national and international fields, especially in Asian countries where people prefer this language over other regional languages. For adult and elderly beginners, it requires persistent hard work. In writing, grammar plays an essential role. The market is flooded with grammar books full of rules and repeated examples. I remember the example of VYBGYOR from my childhood. We could recall the colors of the rainbow in sequence using this mnemonic. The human mind works effectively on associations made and perceptions of images. Church continues: “Word association norms are well known to be an important factor in psycholinguistic research, particularly in the area of lexical retrieval. Generally speaking, subjects reacted more quickly than usual to the word nurse if it followed a strongly associated word like doctor. (p23) Another researcher, Paula Jullian, suggests: “Meaning association is a key aspect of semantics. These mental connections can range from very basic facts and relationships (synonyms-antonyms) to very advanced and sophisticated analogies that lay the foundation for figurative language and metaphors. (p239-247) Furthermore, she emphasizes, “we all make our own correspondences, based on our personal experience, which involve non-linguistic associations”. (p239-247) This refers to our personal associations that we make when we first go somewhere by remembering a building, temple, etc. so that when we return we may not forget our way. It is not only applicable in general life but also plays a central role in learning and teaching.
