  • Essay / What is cultivation theory? - 815

Culture theory is a societal theory that studies the long-term personal effects of media television. Cultivation theory states that the more time the masses spend in the world of television or media, the more likely they are to believe in the elite realism presented on television. Cultivation leaves people with an erroneous perception of what certainly exists in the world. The theory is developed by George Gerbner and Larry Gross. The theory of culture is derived from several large-scale research studies carried out as part of an overall research project called “Culture Indicator”. The goal of the Cultural Indicators project was to identify and track the cultural effects of video on audiences. They were concerned about the effects of television programs, particularly violent programs, on public attitudes and behaviors. Gerbner said it was the general concern about the effects of television on the public. The theory clearly argues that the cultivation effect only occurs after long-term cumulative television viewing. He claimed that because television contains so much violence, people contribute the most time watching television. He postulates that television is a means of mass communication. 24/7, the television is an essential member of the household, with virtually unlimited access to every member of the family. He compared the power of television to the power of religion, asserting that television was to the innovative society what religion once was. Gerbner set out to formulate a new approach to mass communication, to learn a fundamental measure of communication, an approach focused on taking into account mass human activity itself.
