It was first introduced by Joseph A. Faurot, an NYPD police detective. During his visit to the 1903 St. Louis World's Fair, he was captivated by an exhibit of fingerprints. His fascination led him to travel to London to learn more about the profession at Scotland Yard. Simultaneous with his return, the New York Police Department decided to implement fingerprinting as an official practice for identifying criminals. In 1911, Faurot was the first to offer fingerprints as evidence in a criminal trial that ended in conviction.
