Johnnie WebbMrs. KarhlikerWorld LiteratureMarch 13, 2014Piracy in SomaliaOver the course of history, piracy in Somalia has become an increasingly significant problem. Pirates have been ransacking, pillaging and destroying ships for some time now and nothing major has been done to try and stop this. By hijacking these ships, they torture their captives by beating them and even in some extreme cases, killing them. Many people view hackers as a terrorist extremist group and should be considered an extreme threat. The Marauders are violating human rights and must be controlled and stopped before these beatings and killings continue simply for ransom. Somali pirates detain people against their will and thereby violate the human rights of their victims and captives. Piracy in Somalia began because the Somali government allowed foreign fishermen to come and fish in their waters. Once the Somali Civil War broke out, the government was disbanded, as was the Somali Navy. Since then, foreign fishermen have started fishing illegally in the waters surrounding Somalia. The companies that sent the fisherman decided to start dumping waste into the waters, which killed the fishing activity of the people of Somalia. These local fishermen decided to unite to try to defend their resources against these large companies. In doing so, they began hijacking ships and holding people on board as hostages. They then demanded a ransom from the companies in order to recover their crew. Most of the pirates' early targets were commercial lobster fishing boats. The reason behind this was that they were small and easy to take care of, this was necessary for the hacker...... middle of paper ...... and for the strong political system is that the Hackers currently use bribes and physical means. threats to tip the balance of power between politicians and gain long-term access to the coasts (Ending Piracy np). Pirates also use up to 86% of their money for political operations: “The international community has mainly focused on offshore measures to combat piracy. These offshore measures have helped reduce the number of hijackings, but to end piracy these costly measures would need to be expanded and made permanent” (Ending Piracy). Around the world, Somali piracy is becoming an increasingly problematic problem every year. The human rights violations committed by pirates are flagrant and serious. Somali pirates detain people against their will and thereby violate the human rights of their victims and captives. Hackers must be stopped before these attacks on humans continue and get worse..
