I wrote an introductory letter that explains the purpose of portfolios and the requirements. I will send this letter home with my students the first week of class. I designed pre- and post-tests for reading and writing. We will use these assessments to measure student growth. These assessments will become part of the student's portfolio. I have also written a list of reading and writing activities for students to choose from during their independent work time. My plan is to set aside independent work time every Friday. At the beginning of the year, I will teach students my expectations for behavior on Fridays. At the beginning of the year, I will use a teacher-managed approach with the intention of transitioning to student-managed time. On these days, students will complete reading and writing activities of their choice. They will self-assess their work and record it on a skills tracking form, the same form they used to record their pre-test results. I will also lead one-on-one conferences with students during independent work hours. The first few weeks of school, I will meet with each student to review their goals and choice of activities. After that, I will let the students sigh for lectures. As part of their portfolio, students will also be required to include evidence of self-reflection.
