Essay / Analysis of King Lear - 934
The British drama King Lear was written by William Shakespeare and conveyed a very strong message to the audience. The message was that you can't really trust anyone in this world, because even the people who mean the most to you can stab you in the back when you least expect it. Take Lear for example, he went from being a good noble king to a mad man in a matter of days. One of the reasons Lear became so mad was the fact that he divided his kingdom between his two daughters who professed their love for him and banished his youngest daughter for not lying about how much she loved him like his two brothers and sisters. That's not the worst part, the main reason he went crazy was because the two girls he thought he loved so much did nothing but stab him in the back after all that. what he did was love them and care for them throughout their lives. Through the drama, you can tell that Lear is a passionate man but also a very violent person and tempered by his actions. For example, at the very beginning of the play he banishes his daughter Cordelia for not telling him of his love, he becomes so furious because he loved Cordelia the most of all his children. I think he's so upset because he feels like she's ungrateful for everything he's done for his favorite little girl because she just won't say how she feels about him. At the same time as he banishes Cordelia, his most loyal servant Kent tries to intervene and defend Cordelia. He does this because he knows Regan and Goneril are lying about how much he means to them. He tries to make Lear understand that he is making a big mistake by banishing Cordelia because she is the only one who has the truth behind the words she said to Lear. The problem was that Lear is already in the middle of paper......ar and Cordelia are held captive by a captain who acts as a mercenary. Goneril had poisoned Regan, which explains why Regan feels sick at the end of the war. Regan ends up dying and Goneril commits suicide right next to his now deceased sister. Cordelia is hanged by the mercenary and now finds herself alone to see all her children dead right in front of them. With nothing but grief, Lear ends up dying heartbroken. If I was Lear I think the same thing would have happened to me, yes he went to war against his two daughters who stabbed him in the back but the last thing he wanted to see was them dead. If I too saw all my children dead in front of me, I'm pretty sure I would go so crazy in my mind with heartache that I would get angry and try to kill the people who killed my or my daughters, or I would too. die with a broken heart.
