A Personal and Professional Reaction to Sexual AddictionIntroductionSexual addiction is a widespread problem in our society that is often not recognized or acknowledged. Marnie Ferree tackles the difficult and sensitive subject of women struggling with sexual addiction. The book is divided into three sections: the problem of sex addiction, the root of this problem, and the solution. Each section is covered in depth while giving examples of his struggles and those of others who have struggled. The reader gets the feeling that he is not alone. The Problem Marnie Ferree explains that sexual addiction occurs in women just as it does in men. Our society tends to view sex addiction as a sin and a male problem when in reality, sex addiction makes no distinction between men, women, Christians, Americans, etc. It is important to understand what sex addiction is. It involves being addicted to a pathological relationship with a mood-altering substance or behavior (Ferree, 2010). This is an unhealthy and sick relationship. Sexual addiction is a widespread problem: approximately forty percent of adults in the United States are sexually addicted, approximately forty to fifty percent are women (Ferree, 2010). Sex addiction is a secret sin that has existed since the dawn of time. In order to fully recover from sexual addiction, the person must helplessly surrender to the addiction and turn to God to begin the journey to recovery. There are various religious and cultural messages involving sex addiction. In today's world, sex is synonymous with power, it is believed that everyone ...... middle of paper ...... turns for help and confides their sins . As Christians we should not judge others, God is the judge. We must help those in need and not throw stones. John 8:1-11 talks about the woman who committed adultery and Jesus asked those who were without sin to cast the first stone and everyone left. As is true when dealing with someone suffering from sex addiction or any other addiction. Conclusion Sex addiction is real and there is a great need for churches to become involved in the healing and recovery of the addict. It is important for the addict to surrender to God and accept that they are powerless over their addiction. There is hope and recovery is possible through hard work and dedication. It is not an easy path but it is possible. With the right tools, anyone can succeed. Works Cited Ferree, MC (2010). No Stones (2nd ed.). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
