  • Essay / Totalitarian Government on Animal Farm - 922

Government is present in every aspect of daily life. The quality of life depends on the effectiveness of a government in governing and guiding its people. It is difficult to find good leaders who will effectively make decisions in the interest of the people and ensure the prosperity of their country. There are many types of government, and each of them has a favorable trait that makes them seem superior to others, but some governments are better than others. Because of its efficiency and way of life, a totalitarian government is better than a democracy. In Animal Farm, one of the main causes of Napoleon's power over all animals was his use of propaganda, a classic totalitarian tool. He used it to manipulate uneducated animals and made them believe the lies he fed them. In many parts of the book, he ordered Squealer to give the animals false information about the condition of the farm and he made the animals believe that they were living a good life. His use of propaganda was effective and none of the animals questioned his rule and they never saw the injustice done to them. The same mistreatment occurs in many totalitarian governments, including North Korea. The “Hermit Kingdom” is one of the terms given to North Korea because the country is literally in a world apart. Kim Jong Un bans all communication outside his walls and the only news Koreans are allowed to read is a government-backed newspaper, similar to Soviet Pravda. Every person in North Korea is fiercely loyal to Kim Jong Un, and that's exactly what he wants. The reason why the Korean people are so loyal to their leader is because they don't know much. A totalitarian government spreads propaganda and keeps its people in the middle of paper. Additionally, most of the money in America belongs to 5% of its population, the wealthy or “upper class.” The American upper class is very privileged, but the other 90% of the American population relies on food stamps and is homeless. Unlike a democracy, there is no discrimination between social classes because in a totalitarian government, money is distributed fairly among everyone; there is therefore no social classification between “upper, middle and lower classes”. Everyone is equal. Many people argue that a totalitarian government is cruel and very corrupt. Dictators are always criticized because their actions are not for the good of their people, but a democracy is no different from a totalitarian regime; the only difference is that people living in a totalitarian government are equal, productive and stable; what cannot be said for people living in a democracy.
