Essay / Symbolism in "A Worn Path" - 747
Eudora Welty uses symbolism in a worn path by using objects or people to symbolize objects and ideas, for example the main character in A Worn Path is calls Phoenix Jackson who symbolizes Arabic mythology. bird that lives a very long time and dies in a fire but is reborn from its ashes. A website called 123 Help Me says that Phoenix Jackson symbolizes a sign of strength because she stands her ground "while the hunter taunts her with his gun", this shows that she is stronger than the hunter thinks. Another great example that a website named rock writing was that "racism is still prevalent in the south at the time and this is clearly evident throughout the story" (rock writing), the White Hunter taunts Phoenix into believing he is superior by pointing a gun at her. This is an example of symbolism because the white hunter represents racism and the way black people were treated during that time. Another character that has symbolic meaning is the grandson of the phoenix because "when the phoenix dies, its spirit of the phoenix will live on in its grandson who will most likely live a long and happy life." (123 help me) he will be the rebirth of the phoenix. In the short story A Worn Path, there are also objects that symbolize things like the many birds that the phoenix saw on his journey. The editors of 123helpme say that "the buzzards represent death, but the old woman fought her way...and left death" (123helpme). this represents how close death is for Phoenix and how it was a very dangerous path for this old woman and how she overcame this great journey even though nature did not intend it and despite the obstacles that were against her. Another bird she encountered was the black crow which the website 123helpme says they are also middle of paper......e 1940s. She overcame many obstacles than most women aged her background would not be able to overcome because she was a strong independent black woman, she had to be strong for herself and her grandson who she loved very much and he was very vulnerable because he had swallowed lye which is a very toxic poison that burned his throat and left him afraid for life, which is why she comes this far every time he needs his medicine. “Symbolize in 'A path won'. » 123helpme.Np, hdweb.March 17, 2014.Beller, Michele. “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty: Symbols and Themes.
