In this short story, the details of Tempie are not too explicit; However, Tempie's memories allow readers a glimpse of what life was like for those who lived in slavery. In Tempie's writings, it is evident that his life as a slave had both negative and positive experiences. She was able to have children, marry and learn on her plantation; while on other plantations, work was strictly done all the time, marriages were not allowed, and some women had children who belonged to their owners. Tempie was aware of her role and the rules that the owners had in force on the plantation. Her account describes a life lived as a slave at a time when people were whipped, beaten, and sexually abused. Slaves were sold and traded. Fortunately for Tempie, she was able to stay on a plantation where she married and had children. She survived and was able to raise her two children in freedom, instead of slavery. It's rare to find someone who is able to take advantage of what Tempie did during his years as a slave. Her story, although I'm sure it was more difficult at times than others, she managed to stay strong for herself and her children.
