Human ConsciousnessA Portrait of the Brain through Theories and Discussions A hemispherectomy is a surgical process in which a patient's brain is cut in half and one of these parts are then removed. The procedure is only performed on very young individuals because their brains are still flexible, malleable enough for the remaining part to then assume the functions of the half that had been removed. Although this procedure is rather rare, being carried out only when the child in question suffers from dramatic seizures which can only be stopped in this way, it provides a crucial element, well beyond the medical benefit for the individual . Hemispherectomies prove that patients can survive with only half the brain, and so, if the single mind could be split into two separate bodies, producing a pair of similar living organisms, which patient would be the original? This very question has its basis in the complex phenomenon known as consciousness. Human consciousness can be quite difficult to define, as there are different theories and opinions on what the state as a whole is and what it can then be summarized as. . Morgan Kelly (2014) states that most people think of consciousness as the complete “non-physical mental” whole that makes up an individual, such as personality, memory, experiences, and especially emotion. Consciousness is therefore also considered to be more focused, as in the specific elements noted in consciousness. Scientists who study consciousness believe that if an explanation can be found for how the brain becomes aware of something, the broader phenomenon of consciousness can also be explained. According to Kendra Cherry (2013), the functional definition of this consciousness from a middle of paper......is between different actions, forming a bridge between the conscious and the subconscious.
