These countries contribute greatly to the global production of oranges. Most oranges grow best in humid, tropical/subtropical climates. Oranges require nitrogen-rich fertilizer to thrive. Most oranges are grown in flat lands or plains. Oranges require loose, very deep soil. Oranges can grow in temperatures ranging from 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Orange trees do not produce oranges during the winter months. The average farm size in Florida is 195 acres and has a total of 9.2 million acres of farmland. The workforce on Florida's orange plantations is primarily made up of illegal Mexican immigrants. These workers are paid a rate of 70 to 90 cents per 90 pound box. They earn less than $75 a day. Some Florida farmers are turning to machines for cheap labor. These machines are more efficient than immigrant workers. This reduces the time needed to pick many oranges.
