  • Essay / My father's story and key events in America...

My grandfather turned 100 in 1875. On the night of his birthday, he took me aside and told me about his life ; and important moments in history that he deemed worthy of being told. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1775, “on the eve of the American Revolution.” His father was British and his mother Irish. They both came to the colonies because they saw opportunities there. Their means of transportation was by boat. When they arrived, they had no money and had to become indentured slaves. They ended up working together, her mother said it was love at first sight, and when her father had the chance to choose who his wife would be, when he finished his contract with the owner, he chosen. They moved to a cabin and had a large plantation where they grew corn. At first it was hard; the corn did not grow because the soil was not good. Things finally improved and their corn grew. They sold it to their friends and neighbors; and all those who came to buy corn. But when the revolution came, people didn't buy as much as before because in some homes, wives had to take care of the fields and business while husbands went off to war, facing their own difficulties. Some of my grandfather's parents' neighbors were single men and when they went to war there was no one to buy their corn; and things were getting worse. They had to sell their slaves because they could no longer afford to feed them and therefore had no choice but to do the work themselves. He doesn't really remember his father because he joined the revolution when his grandfather was only 4 years old. . He wanted to know why all this fighting was happening, so he asked his mother why it was happening...... middle of paper ......nts that were added to the Constitution. The 13th Amendment is an important amendment because it was the one that abolished slavery, making it illegal, thus giving America the motivation to avoid having slaves who would work for free. The 14th Amendment provides citizenship rights and makes all men equal under the law. Finally, the 15th Amendment gives citizens the right to vote, no matter who they are, giving them a voice in government. This is the most important of all because it allows people to choose who will represent their country, state, etc. Around 1864, my grandfather and grandmother thought they had enough money to support themselves. So they sold their house and land and decided to move to Pennsylvania, to my grandfather. He wants to end his life where he started it, in this cottage. Where he knew what peace and memories were.
