In summary, studies reveal three main ways of viewing psychopaths. There are psychopath experts who view psychopaths as violent, others who generally view them as non-violent and successful, and others who believe they are non-violent but take the opportunity to take advantage of unsuspecting people in a criminal manner. Psychopaths are mostly non-violent and successful, but tend to use people for their own benefit in ways that society does not consider legal or moral. However, the Dexter series perpetuates a problematic cultural myth that all psychopaths are violent and relentless criminals. In reality, there are many more non-violent, high-functioning psychopaths in our global society than most would assume after seeing Dexter. In Dexter, the series provides countless examples of how popular culture perpetuates the cultural myth that psychopaths are violent and have the ability to instill fear in society. An example of this myth perpetuated in the Dexter series is that of Dexter's brother, Brian Moser. Moser, also known as the Ice Truck Killer, is presented as a complex individual capable of imitating society's norms while killing innocent people. When Dexter finally discovers his connection to the Ice Truck Killer he is hunting, he finally realizes the reasons for Moser's merciless dismemberment of individuals, for he too witnessed the brutal dismemberment of their mother. The exception was that Moser was older and did not have the assistance of Dexter's adoptive father to help him deal with his previous trauma.
