According to Travis Hirschi, by establishing and forming strong social bonds, the likelihood of a person committing a criminal act is slim to none. Hirschi's theory of social control and social bonding focuses on what contributes to the prevention of a criminal act rather than what causes someone to engage in a criminal act. Hirschi's social control theory of social bonding contains four elements that contribute to social bonding. These four elements include attachment, commitment, involvement and belief. On the other hand, the Bond Gone Wrong theory doesn't seem to be the same. By focusing on what drives an individual to commit a criminal act rather than what prevents them from committing it, the bond gone bad theory suggests that social bonding can contribute to criminal acts. The bond gone wrong theory states that social bonding such as attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief can contribute to crime. Additionally, it suggests that people commit crime for three compelling reasons. These three driving reasons include victim retaliation, protection, and social control. Individuals who are victims of crime are more likely to commit a crime or criminal act. The criminal act inflicted on the individual may be a physical, mental, emotional or verbal attack. However, the individual was the victim of a crime and is therefore more than likely to fight back. This is called victim retaliation. Hirschi's four elements of social bond contribute greatly to victim retaliation because the victim's attachment to family and friends who she thought could help her has disintegrated. Additionally, the individual's involvement and engagement in school activities may result in the individual becoming a victim. However, the person who has more self-control and self-discipline is less likely to respond with criminal acts. Obviously, engaging in criminal activity is based on choice. However, according to the Bond Gone Wrong theory, the decision can be affected by social connection and self-control. With a strong social bond, comes protection. If something were to harm or interfere with the strong bond, it could cause the individual to retaliate. However, with self-control, results may differ. Nonetheless, the Bond Gone Wrong theory can be used in the future as a theory to better understand why some people commit crimes rather than just labeling them or assuming that they are all the same, killing or stealing for no reason..
