  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Vietnam War - 1085

There have been many wars throughout the history of the United States, but the one that is most questionable is the Vietnam War which lasted twenty years . Was this war a mistake for America? We certainly think that was the case. There was fighting for twenty years straight, with many deaths and nothing gained in the process. Yes, we stopped the spread of communism in the South, but what do we get in return? A huge debt and a lot of grief. This whole fiasco started with the beginning of the spread of communism from North Vietnam to South Vietnam which began to scare the United States. When we first started hearing about all this, President Eisenhower proposed the domino theory, which said that if South Vietnam and China fell to communism, the rest of Asia would soon follow. America gradually got more and more involved until around 1963-1964, when we did our best and knew it was all-out war. By 1964, the United States was most involved in the war and we continued to send more and more troops and supplies. When we arrived, we began using new weapons to fight back, such as the use of Napalm and the even more deadly Agent Orange from about 1963 to 1973. There were mostly small scams here and there, but no real military action was taken until January. On August 8, 1966, when the United States launched Operation Crimp, which is considered the largest attack of the entire war. Deploying nearly 8,000 troops and a number of tanks and other armored vehicles, America set about locating as many VietCong camps as possible. We showed no mercy, but we only found a few smaller camps and fought a few nice little battles. After this "failed" operation, we launched Operation Birmingham, an all-out search and destroy mission with just over 5,000 troops supported by a massive wall of tanks, planes, helicopters, armored vehicles and other artillery pieces launched in April 1968 and which lasted until May 1968. During this period of one and a half to two months, we managed to eliminate only about a hundred VietCong , but we captured about 500 tons of food and other supplies. However, Operation Birmingham was considered another failure. While the United States seemed to fail in every major operation, we ultimately withdrew from the war. For example, this war was the first war to be broadcast live on television. Why would you want to televise people running around, hurting themselves and even getting killed? It just doesn't make sense to us, but I'm sure there was a reason. Another fun fact that seems pretty relevant to the topic is that the Vietnam War US Page!3 state that lost the most people in the battle was California with about 5,575 people. Second place goes to New York with nearly 4,119 deaths. (archives.gov)After hearing all this information, what do you think? Was the war a mistake? We certainly do. From all the fighting, supplies, money, and especially all the senseless loss of life caused by the Vietnam War. Let's just hope we can stay away if conflicts like this in the world
