Dreams DeferredEverything has a price; not only material goods that we buy with money, but also intangible goods that do not seem expensive. For example, how much does it cost to get an A in school? It may not require money, but it definitely takes hard work and dedication. This example is synonymous with achieving your dreams, whatever those dreams may be. Often in school, ambitious students must sacrifice another facet of their lives to achieve their academic goals. In A Raisin in the Sun, many characters must give up something they hold dear to realize their own idea of success. Everyone has their own dreams. Although some people may have similar aspirations, no two are exactly the same. Hansberry's play, A Raisin in the Sun, reflects this concept by expressing that each character's idea of the American dream is distinct in its own way. Even though each character's goal is different, they all have one thing in common: every goal requires a sacrifice. Hansberry's use of language, characterization, and context clearly details the overwhelming truth that achieving dreams comes at a price. The main element of Hansberry's publication that communicates its theme is language. The characters each have their own dialect, just as they have their own desires. There is also a distinct disparity in dialect between members of each race. The play highlights this disparity by forcing most young people to use faulty grammar and often broken English. The main exception to this rule in the Younger family is Beneatha, and this also ties into her dream.
