  • Essay / Can pro-diversity television programs influence change...

American children, on average, spend more time watching television programs than interacting with adults, siblings or to go to school (Feldman, Coats and Spielman, 1996). ). This finding introduces the challenge for major networks to use television to positively guide children's social learning when they return home from school. Studies have shown that even brief exposure to television can produce positive effects on learning during childhood (Rice & Woodsmall, 1998), and that television programs can also positively influence prosocial behaviors and role concepts gender (Forge and Phemister, 1987, Mares & Woodward, 2001, O'Bryant & Corder-Bolz, 1978 and Signorelli, 2001). Additionally, many of the existing educational programs for young children aim to influence attitudes related to racial prejudice (Persson & Musher-Eizenman, 2003). If mainstream networks had psychological research to back up their efforts, then children's television could be as socially arousing as it is relaxing. This routine is rooted in their business concept that greater diversity will attract younger viewers and produce higher ratings (Deggens, 2013). Over the past year, some critics have been skeptical of these sessions, since last fall Fox released a series called Dads, in which all the jokes involving actors from minority races are based on...... middle of paper... ...with more emphasis on the message that any individual can be a strong and positive character, instead of emphasizing their weaknesses. By not recognizing culturally stereotypical differences and giving minority protagonists positive role model characters, racial equality education could be more effective. In summary, this study aims to test whether an updated set of criteria will influence a change in preschool children's racial attitudes. : (a) the episode includes several characters of different races, (b) positive similarities are highlighted between characters of different racial origins, (c) the message in favor of diversity is subtle, not explicit, (d) the plot is simple and relevant. and interesting, and finally, (e) all characters should be depicted as equal with respect to their status in relation to each other, emphasizing the most positive characteristics of each character..
