Essay / Review of Fiction Book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick . Black Hearts is a fiction book about soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division of the 502nd Infantry Regiment during a deployment to Iraq in 2005. Black Hearts is a book that gives the reader's perspective of the different types of stress that 'a soldier suffers during a deployment. both physically and especially mentally. The book delves into and describes realistic events throughout the deployment and the impact it had on a specific business. In 2005, the Iraq War was one of the worst periods in Iraq for the US military. The number of IEDS grew and became more dangerous as Iraqi insurgents began to perfect them over the course of the war. The majority of the book took place in Baghdad, Iraq, also known as the Triangle of Death. During this period, IED fire, both indirect and direct, was frequent and resulted in large numbers of casualties and injuries to American soldiers. This put a lot of stress on the soldier and showed the different types of reactions caused by stress. Many images and sights a soldier sees during deployment are disturbing to him and are presented differently from everyone. The destructive and disturbing landscapes would change the lives of the soldiers forever. The description one soldier gave when he went out on patrol was that he was always tense. He knew there would be an IED but he didn't know if he was going to catch it. One example given by a soldier was of a person who routinely checked their mailbox every day and had their routine altered with an explosive that had a one in four chance of being in the mail. The person knows it's there but has to open the mailbox. The example describes the anticipation...... middle of paper...... Lt Britt's body flew into the canal and Lopez's body was obliterated. CPT Goodwin was devastated at the time. The event traumatized him in words I cannot describe. LTC Kunk heard the news and gave CPT Goodwin a few days off in the Green Zone. The CPT took time to recover from the loss of soldiers and the decision that ultimately killed them. Ultimately, I chose CPT Goodwin because of the obstacles he had to overcome. Even though his decision-making was perfect most of the time, he made the one mistake that ultimately cost his soldiers their lives. CPT Goodwin was able to overcome this decision and continue his military career. He later discovered the murders and reported them to LTC Kunk. No decision remained with him that affected another decision he made later. He knew the deaths were in the job description and didn't let it affect him at all..
