  • Essay / The play Oedipus the King by Sophocles - 1012

The play Oedipus the King is a Greek tragedy by Sophocles, which takes place in the kingdom of Thebes. In the play "Oedipus the King", Sophocles uses sarcasm in the form of Oedipus' speech to the people of Thebes, in his miserable and seemingly inevitable fate, as the king accidentally killed his own father and had an incestuous relationship with his mother. Throughout the play Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shapes the entire story using dramatic irony. Fate and fortune acted throughout the life of King Oedipus, but they could not prevent his appearance. Yet when it comes to drama, tragedy and mockery often go hand in hand; the same can be said of Oedipus the King, as Oedipus' uncontrolled temper slowly digs a deeper hole for him, even as irony continues to build around him and ultimately makes him more tragic. Efforts were made to overcome what was written in his destiny, as Jacosta and King Laius planned to kill their child when he was born, but King Oedipus fled from Corinth to prevent the evil deed from happening. Basically, this play is about who Oedipus' parents are and what kind of man he is. The audience receives the truth in Oedipus's words and waits with long suspense for him to finally realize the truth himself, but just when the audience thinks he will, insight continues to elude them. However, Sophocles uses many different acts throughout the play that depict dramatic irony. The most important are Oedipus' curse on himself and his incestuous relationship with his mother. The first effort was to stop the fate of Jocasta and King Laius. After their marriage, King Laius of Thebes and his wife Jocasta were warned by the Oracle of Delphi that they would have a son who... middle of paper ...... that she married her own son and would have children with his blood. In conclusion, this is also called a “perfect tragedy” because of the dramatic irony and drama that occurs and is reflected in your destiny. The audience witnessed the tragedies of fate that King Oedipus was trapped in throughout his life. Everything that was said by the prophet happened in the life of Oedipus. However, even after many efforts to prevent all the bad actions from happening, they could not prevent them at all. After committing such evil actions as killing his own father and sleeping with his mother, it was obligatory that King Oedipus had to suffer the evil things he did, even though it was not planned, but it made him led to be banished from Thebes. The moral of the story is that you cannot change what is written in your destiny and it doesn't matter what happens in the end..
