What Motivates Offenders to Commit Identity TheftConcealment is one of the main motivators that cause many offenders to commit theft crimes identity. Concealing previous crimes is a big reason why people steal or adopt false identities. A striking example is that of Kathleen, the woman behind numerous bombings and murders in the city, who assumed the identity of Sara Olson, a Scandinavian national living in Minnesota. She managed to avoid arrest for over two decades (Anania et al., 178). During that time, she married and became a doctor, had three children, took a job as a community volunteer, volunteered for charities in Africa, and moved to a fashionable Minnesota neighborhood ( Lenardon 56). Terrorism has become an important channel through which identities are stolen to conceal criminal activities and to complicate investigations into their true identities after committing crimes. All the terrorists involved in the September 11 attacks in the United States were protected in different ways by identity theft experts. This contributed to a huge security problem when innocent American citizens who fell victim to it
