Paul says: “Our knowledge of life is limited to death” (Remark, Everything calms down on the Western Front). The main character and his classmates were only nineteen or twenty years old when they enlisted to go to war. Even before going to war, the only thing these young men knew was death, cruelty, suffering and despair. War forces men to constantly fear for their lives. When they are on the war front, they are not fighting for their country, they are fighting for their own lives. Note writes how war has a destructive effect on the mental and physical health of soldiers. Furthermore, it makes them feel hopeless and hopeless, they have no hope for a future after the war. Therefore, the soldiers fighting in World War I disconnected from their emotions to survive the horrible situation of the war they were fighting. “We want to live at all costs; we therefore cannot burden ourselves with sentiments which, even if they may be quite ornamental in times of peace, would not be out of place here” (Note, All Quiet on the Western Front). Note in this quote shows how soldiers cope mentally with the burden of war. All the soldiers maintain a great bond of friendship and loyalty since they all share the experiences of
