A diversity perspective is something you take into consideration when advising a client. In person-centered therapy, the first major limitation of these multicultural populations is that people who are in mental health clinics may be receiving a different type of treatment. They may want something more structured to help them with emotional issues and want to learn some coping skills to deal with everyday problems. In the context of person-centered counseling, this may not be the best type of therapy in this type of situation. The second reason why there might be some limitations is that it might be difficult to translate basic therapeutic conditions into actual practice in some cultures. For example, some clients are used to indirect communication and would not be comfortable with a therapist showing them direct expressions. A third reason this type of therapy might be a limitation is that some cultural groups embrace collectivism instead of focusing on being an individual. In these cultures, customers are influenced by social expectations and not motivated by their own expectations.
