Essay / Silent Epidemic - 800
As Americans residing in a sports-loving society dominated by the billion-dollar industry known as the National Football League (NFL), it is often difficult to face the fact that the United States is the only nation in the world that truly enjoys football. However, studies by modern scientists show that football is not an activity that players can indulge in, as its health risks far outweigh its glory benefits. “League of Denial” examines numerous cases in which the NFL has denied any direct connection to the cause and effect of brain injuries, concussions and dementia from playing football. Even though renowned and accomplished scientists took on the challenge of finding a link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and playing football, the NFL shut them down game after game. Omalu's name and reputation have been unforgivably denigrated – the NFL has called the Nigerian-American doctor's research "voodoo," demeaned him, and dismissed his intellect and credentials through racist stereotypes. The league denied any connection to football-related brain injuries and published its own articles disputing Omalu's claims; falsely reassuring people that football is safe. The NFL's artifice did not stop with its blatant racism toward Omalu. When Dr. Ann...... middle of document...... cannot continue to support an activity that puts children at risk by damaging what is considered the most important muscle in the human body, the brain. League of Denial” undoubtedly opened my eyes to the disturbing truth that society has been hiding from me. Many scientists interviewed throughout the film pointed out that humans were not biologically created to play football, and this notion has always been proven true. It is clear that an athlete must sacrifice his body to succeed in football, even if it means serious injuries, mental rehabilitation, or even death at a relatively early age. Unfortunately, this “silent epidemic” remains heavily protected by the all-powerful and invincible NFL. Even if the future of football seems assured, the plea for better health preservation will soon triumph over the murderous culture..
