The novel, The Bluest Eye, written by Toni Morrison, chronicles about a year in the life of an eleven-year-old girl from Ohio, Pecola Breedlove, who experiences feelings of rejection, inferiority and self-deprecation because of racism in their society. Toni Morrison thus presents the idea that America lives under a stereotype that suggests that to be accepted into a community, one must be what society considers beautiful, in this case, white. It was written in 1970 and is therefore considered part of contemporary literature that represents works written after World War II. In a country of approximately 308 million people, diversity is no stranger to the United States of America, especially when 30 million of them are foreign-born individuals. It is therefore not surprising that his literature is also so varied and evolving, although this has not always been the case. The early 1900s saw limited social and economic advancements, and as a result, this era greatly restricted the fashions and types of ideas that would eventually make it into print for readers.
