Essay / The Movie A Beautiful Mind - 1053
The Movie A Beautiful Mind (Howard, 2011) is a biography about the life of John Nash, a famous mathematician. John Nash is best known for his many contributions to mathematics, such as solving Riemann's most puzzling mathematical problem and becoming famous for what is known as the Nash solution. Nash began his career at Princeton where he was a very intelligent and well-known mathematics graduate student. At Princeton, Nash begins trying to discover a revolutionary equation in mathematics while battling many different illusions. The first friend Nash meets is his roommate at Princeton who soon later becomes his best friend. Then, when he is promoted to professor of mathematics at another university, he then begins to think that he is working with the government to help them break Soviet codes. Later in the film, many of these different people and situations seem to be nothing more than an illusion in John Nash's mind. Nash has difficulty distinguishing between illusions and what is really happening. So, after watching the movie A Beautiful Mind, I came to the conclusion that John Nash exhibits symptoms of schizophrenia, more specifically paranoid schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a difficult disorder that makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and unreal, think clearly, and manage emotions. , interact with others and function normally. (Smith, 2004, p. 1.) It is stated that most cases of schizophrenia occur later, during adolescence or early adulthood. Schizophrenics have difficulty distinguishing between reality and illusions. They see things that aren't there and speak in strange and difficult to understand ways and normally feel like everyone is out to get them or harm them. Schizophrenia is a disorder that can... middle of paper...... government more often and he was not able to distinguish between what was real and what he was seeing. John is later placed in a hospital for help. John gets help and then begins to learn to control his delusions and block out his demons. Throughout the movement, John displays many different delusions and hallucinations. Everything he believes to be real, yet he is the only one who sees these things and knows these things are happening. When speaking to others, John tends to stutter and suffers from disorganized speech. Nash used very appropriate terms to talk about a problem usually related to a math problem. He rarely showed emotions when interacting with others. These are all symptoms and signs that have manifested themselves over the years. This proves that suffering from all of these signs over a period of time shows that Jon has paranoid schizophrenia...
