Twenty miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, this rural farming town was a very quiet community. But on the morning of August 10, 1991, all that changed in the blink of an eye. A temple worker, who was delivering food that morning, felt a strange feeling of silence. He searched the temple to find anyone who was awake. By the time he arrived, usually the monks were already awake and carrying out daily tasks and activities. But this was no ordinary morning. As the temple worker entered the living room, he couldn't believe what he saw. The six monks who lived there, along with a nun and two teenage temple servants, stood incredibly still in front of the couch in the middle of the room. It only took a month before something came to light in this matter. On October 24, 1991, ballistics lab reports came back of the gun found in Caratachea's car. They confirmed that the .22 caliber bullet casings found at the scene of the massacre matched those fired from his gun. Authorities then recovered a search warrant to search the apartment where Caratachea lived with Jonathan Doody and Alessandro Garcia. In their apartment, a 20-gauge shotgun was found, which was later compared to the 20-gauge shotgun shells found at the scene of the massacre..
