Essay / The Worldview of Modernism and Modernism: The Power of...
The Power of PerceptionThere are certain standards that man has created to classify how one can think or believe. In different cultures, some people believe differently than others. Many questions can be discussed and analyzed, specific to a worldview. For example, a question that could be used to analyze a worldview would be metaphysics. Metaphysics asks “what is,” epistemology asks “how do we know,” and axiology asks “what is the nature of value.” All of these are very important to study and used to gain a better understanding. The basis of the worldview is human perception. Worldview has to do with the way one may think and is subject to change over time. The worldview of modernism directly contradicts many theistic beliefs. This leads CS Lewis directly assesses how a metaphorical view of modernism has hindered the Christian vision by stating: “Almost all our education has been directed toward the silencing of this timid and persistent inner voice; almost all our modern philosophies have been designed to convince us that the good of man is to be found on this earth” (Lewis 620). This conflicts with Christian theism because Christians believe that God is the ultimate reality. Theism and modernism come into conflict with metaphysical questions but also with epistemological questions. Theism believes that God is the giver of all wisdom and knowledge, while modernism comes from a more selfish view that knowledge is acquired on one's own, through reason and logic. The axiology deeply separates theism and modernism, because it shows what the true values of the time are. CS Lewis speaks of the values and misguidance of modernism when he writes: "One cause of misery and vice is always present with us in the greed and pride of men, but at certain periods of history this has been considerably increased by the temporary prevalence of certain fakes. philosophy” (Lewis 163). The view of modernism is to elevate the status of oneself and envy what others have. Theism contradicts this because the Bible clearly states that Christians must place their values in God and be selfless toward His values.
