Essay / Article Analysis Stop Blamming Videogames - 715
An argumentative essay titled “Stop Blaming Videogames,” from an online source, claims that violent video games do not increase aggression among adolescents. The author also emphasizes that gaming is a solitary activity and encourages social interaction by creating online friendships. This raises a lot of controversy over whether or not video games should be regulated for minors. The author makes the growing case that parents are complaining that video games are just too violent. To say that video games are violent would have to be concluded from a period of evaluation of how people interact and use this technology. Unlike parents, general gamers like Master Chief have had a lot of positive comments to say about the games on blogs such as this forum on Gamespot. They believe that video games can help children learn to overcome obstacles, encourage team skills through social interaction, and prevent children from using drugs. In reality, this thinking is misguided. Video games actually encourage bad habits and should actually be regulated for minors. The author loves acting so much and that is why I am led to disagree with this argument in his biased thoughts. The argument is biased because he, along with the entire professional gamer forum, is in favor of the game and wants to defend its name. This player is not really reasonable. He uses his emotions to influence his opinion on the argument instead of using his reasoning skills. Besides not being reasonable, it is not logical when he mentions that games for example "Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6" offer player options that "ignite the sense of logical thinking and strategic formations in which the 'formal education does not offer'. .... middle of paper ...... are also the tool for social interactions. Friendships can sometimes be developed through playing video games and ultimately keeping them away from drug use and violent activities.” This is a valid point, but one could argue the opposite by implying that video games introduce drug use and violent activities, both of which go hand in hand with aggression. The fact that the author chose to include a source that contradicts his argument is very interesting. By using this quote, it helps connect to his argument and he gives proper reasoning for why this presents evidence but does not serve as proof that violent games actually increase violent thoughts. In conclusion, this is a thought-provoking argumentative essay and while I disagree, the author uses references and studies that can demonstrate the impact of video games on adolescents..
