Elder AbuseIntroductionMr. White, an 81-year-old widower who suffered a stroke, lives with his only remaining family, his half-sister and her daughter. The two men took care of him by driving Mr. White to appointments and to the bank to get money to help pay his bills. Due to his deteriorating health and his gratitude to his half-sister, he trusted his half-sister with a great soul to manage all his finances. Mr. White is so blinded by their hypocrisy that he didn't know the two were players. Since that day, they have been secretly spending his money for their personal interests. Their interest in Mr. White has also waned as he often finds himself without food while the two are busy gambling at the casino. After losing large amounts of money, they would vent their emotions by pinching him and yelling at him, telling him that he was useless and a burden. Mr. White lost 30 pounds. in 3 months and locks himself in his room whenever the two are there. Mr. White faces a commonly hidden and underreported problem called elder abuse. Elder abuse, according to the World Health Organization (para. 1), (cited in Daly and Schoenfelder, 2011, p. 11) is “a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person.” Research estimates that between 700,000 and 1.2 million adults over the age of 65 suffer from elder abuse (Taylor C., Lillis C., LeMone P., Lynn P, 2011, p. 426).
