Stuart SchmidtkeAnalysis IIMarch 5, 2014Bhopal Chemical Leak DisasterWhen things go wrong, many people blame someone else or look to someone else for help. get out of their mess. What Dow didn't know was that they would compensate the victims of the Bhopal disaster for the same amount of money for which they purchased Union Carbide Corporation. The Bhopal disaster is an example of an image crisis. Even though Union Carbide Corporation represented a financial gain, Dow ruined its image by taking so long to clean up a mess that left thousands dead. On December 2, 1984, a toxic leak from the Bhopal factory exposed half a million people to forty tons of Methylisocyante (Greenpeace.org). The leak was caused by large quantities of water entering the methylisocyanant tank, which is believed to be a deliberate injection to cut costs (Bhopal.com). Over the next few days, more than eight thousand people would die from exposure to the gases, and over the next two decades, hundreds of thousands would be exposed to contaminated soil and groundwater. Union Carbide Corporation left a huge disaster in India, and Dow believed that they were the ones who could clean up the mess and compensate the victims of the disaster. Dow Jones Chemical taking responsibility for the Bhopal disaster is the perfect example of the image crisis. The image crisis is how a company perceives itself and how the public perceives it.
