  • Essay / Instant Karma The Commercialization of Asian Indians...

Even though Asian Indian culture has been commodified and accepted in its whitewashed form, it is not as easily accepted in its Indian context original. A participant in Sandhu's study expressed this idea: "It's one thing when an American wears a bhindi and all that, but when my mother does it, people stare and whisper. Generally, when people wear it for a religious statement, they get stared at, but for a fashion statement, it's okay” (Sudha 86). Dominant white culture may benefit from the commercialization of bhindis, mehndi, and yoga, among other symbols of Asian Indian culture, but Asian Indians are disadvantaged by the same consequences.
