Prisoners in solitary confinement do not eat, sometimes just to be annoying and defiant against the system and sometimes their mental state prevents the convicts from eating. The mental state of the condemned is the most affected. The American Friends Service Committee states that up to 64 percent of prisoners in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) suffered from mental illnesses.
