Essay / Charles Luciano: An Italian gangster - 1318
Since my teenage years, I have participated in criminal activities. In the United States, I went from being a simple criminal to a crime boss, eventually becoming the father of organized crime in the United States. My name is Charles “Lucky” Luciano and this is my story. I was born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily, to my parents Antonio and Rosalia Lucania. In Sicily, my father worked in the sulfur mines. However, the promise of a better life in America led my family to immigrate to the United States in 1907, when I was only ten years old. The trip wasn't that long, only lasting 17 days, but it gave me the opportunity to dwell on what I expected from this move. After arriving at Ellis Island, my parents chose to settle in New York, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They probably chose to settle there because many Italian immigrants had also settled in this area. When I turned 14, I decided that school wasn't for me and dropped out. I immediately got a job delivering hats, using my money to play dice games. After winning a substantial amount of money in a game, I had the idea of making money on the streets. With the money I had, I created my own gang. What differentiated us from other gangs was that we offered protection to Jewish teenagers against Italian and Irish gangs whose only activity was petty crime. During this time, I became friends with a Jewish teenager named Meyer Lansky. We became close friends, eventually becoming future business partners. For years, I continued to operate with small gangs, until the passage of Prohibition in 1919. I had already begun to associate with many future mob leaders through the Five Points Gang. Some of these men include Vito Genovese, Frank...... middle of paper ...... activities. However, in 1957, Vito Genovese believed he could overthrow the Luciano crime family in New York. He shot and wounded my acting boss, Frank Costello, forcing him to hand over control of the family to Genovese. Genovese was not a smart guy and ended up having many high-ranking mobsters arrested during a botched meeting that was raided by the police. His stupidity allowed me to hatch a plan to dethrone Genovese. I arranged a way for Genovese to be falsely accused of drug trafficking, which led to his arrest. Gambino has now become the head of the family. Currently, I am planning to meet with an American producer to discuss my plan to make a biographical film about me. In a few days I will meet him at Naples International Airport. Let's hope everything goes as planned. Otherwise, this little autobiography that I wrote about myself should suffice as a reference for the film.
