Among the many behaviors that are practiced daily, some become bad habits and are difficult to break. There are various behavior modification techniques, or treatment approaches based on the principles of operant conditioning, that can be used to eliminate these problems. Operant conditioning involves controlling and manipulating one's behavior through reinforcement and punishment to help them understand their behavior and try to correct it. Not only can some of these behaviors be frustrating, but they can also be unhealthy, and it is necessary to find an approach to breaking the habit. An undesirable behavior that affects many children and adults around the world is nail biting. Nail biting, also known as onychophagia, is defined as a nervous affliction or neurosis in which the free edges of the nails are eaten away (Davis 1265). In other words, to bite your nails, you have to put one or more fingers in your mouth and bite the nail with your teeth.
