  • Essay / An Impact of Dance in Life

Ask anyone and they will tell you that their mother got them involved in some sort of sport or extracurricular activities when they were younger. When I was younger, those sports were gymnastics and ballet. Sometimes people choose these sports and run with them and sometimes they decide that these sports just aren't for them. In the case of Melanie, a first-year nursing student, that sport was dance. Unlike many others, she took up dancing and ran with it, making it a passion. Say no to plagiarism. Instantly, his eyes lit up and a smile spread across his face. I told her I had a few brief questions about her dancing career and her memory came back. “I started dancing when I was four,” she told me. This is often when moms start getting their kids involved in sports or the arts. In fact, that's exactly what she told me. “Personally, I got involved because my mother thought it was a good way for me to exercise while young and teach me discipline, teamwork and increase my self-esteem of oneself from a very young age.” That's how a lot of these things start but some people learn to love it. Some are getting started. Melanie goes on to say, “Later, I personally learned to enjoy it because I could easily make friends through teamwork and the satisfaction I felt after memorizing a choreography for dancing increased my self-esteem”. Once she got to know the other kids and became more confident in her abilities, she danced with it, so to speak. Now that the door was open, she learned to really enjoy it. She even started attending recitals and dance performances in her free time to appreciate its beauty. As she became more familiar with the dance and its different types, she became more interested in trying them herself. Throughout her years as a dancer, she has incorporated different genres into her dance routine. This included everything from classical ballet to modern hip-hop. “I've done all kinds of things,” she replied when asked about the different categories, “I've done tap, jazz, ballet, point, hip- hop and contemporary.” In each genre, she learned something new from their energies. Each type of music and dance told its own stories. Everyone had an impression. Of course, thanks to these different courses, she was able to make more friends and become more involved in the environment. As his confidence and experience grew, so did his opportunities. Throughout her dancing career, Mélanie has participated in several different dance productions. This includes everything from relaxed, low-key recitals to full-on mass productions. Each production had its own experience. Every production she learned from. When asked what productions she had been involved in over the years, she went back into her memory to remember each one. “I have performed in ten annual recitals and Christmas productions as well as showings at the county fair in my home in Maryland. I also continued to perform at the Orange Bowl during my junior year of high school.” Thanks to a jobhard work, dedication and years of practice, Mélanie managed to succeed. She began by performing small recitals with her peers throughout her childhood and eventually rose through the ranks high enough to achieve a widely recognized performance. Not only was it impressive that she was able to perform at the Orange Bowl, but she was able to perform at a relatively young age. “Most of the people I played with were juniors and seniors in high school. I was one of the youngest to play there.” We've all seen different Football Bowls and we all know how selective they are when choosing which schools and dance teams to feature. “Not only was my dance team selected, but a number of high schools from all over the country were selected to perform with us,” she said. Mélanie has been practicing all her life, but once she entered her final year of high school, she had to make a choice. When they go to college, many children are unable to continue pursuing their passions such as dance and the arts. When she decided to attend the University of Alabama, she made the choice to give up dance and focus on her schoolwork. Being a nursing major doesn't leave you with a lot of free time. In fact, Melanie said she aspired to become a trauma surgeon, meaning her love of dancing had to be abandoned. She just didn't have time for both. But she still loves the art of dance and thinks about it often. “I don’t dance anymore. However, I attend various dance performances at university and at home when I get the chance. In fact, I'm going to see my sister's performance when I go home for the holidays." Even though she is unable to experience the dance herself, she is able to experience it through someone else. Her dancing days are over, at least for now, but she continues to crave it. When asked if she still wished she could go back to dancing, she immediately replied: “Yes, because it was always a fun way to work out. It allowed me to make friends with people I normally wouldn’t have in the community and showcase a passion of mine.” Thanks to her experience as a dancer, she was able to learn much more than just dance moves. She was able to master confidence, charisma and courage. These traits carried over into other areas of his life. It's obvious just from talking to her that these are qualities she was not only born with, but acquired from being around such a fun and supportive environment most of her life. Art has passed through and progressed throughout human history, but dance stood out as something unusual. With just one dance, you can tell a hundred stories. It's all in the eyes of the beholder. Dance leaves the story up to interpretation. That's part of what makes it so beautiful. When Melanie started dancing and incorporated it into her own life, she learned a few things about depth and beauty. Sometimes the most beautiful stories are the ones without words. Sometimes the things we do, like dancing, can change our lives. Perhaps this is why our mothers push us towards these activities. Works Cited Kiefer, AW and Riley, MA (2019).
