  • Essay / Claiming Perfection While Causing Trouble: Total...

As early as 1887, Native Americans were considered uncivilized and were forcibly assimilated by the white man into adopting the white man's culture. This caused many Indians to be sent to boarding schools that attempted to teach them American culture, Christianity, and English. Essentially, it caused them to abandon everything they were. Schooling was the result of both twisted parental instinct and standard American greed. Indians were told to value things differently, like community and environment, in order to fit in with the materialistic American. Almost no one was willing to admit that there had been a "disastrous attempt to force individual Indians or groups of Indians to be what they did not want to be" (Boxer). Like Indian assimilation, forcing students into a single culture to fit into total institutions is a horrible idea. Total institutions, a place where a large group of people are cut off from the outside community, are dangerous places for society, which appear as large places filled with pride but end up causing more harm than good. The articles "The My Lai Massacre" and "What is the Citadel" showed the disastrous results of putting someone trained as a standard soldier or anything else in a different environment. The article “Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy” and The Lords of Discipline show the terrible personalities and character that people acquire through these total institutes. The terrors of forced assimilation are discussed in the article “Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy” and in the book The Lords of Discipline. The problem of total institutions must be solved if our society is to try to stop preparing students for disaster, teaching them bad habits, and having to...... middle of paper ...... cope even to simple things like traffic lights and clocks. Many lost jobs, saw their lifestyle and living conditions deteriorate, from which they were supposed to be saved. As a result, large numbers of Indians returned to reservations. The motivation behind offshoring is believed to be greed, as they could make money from it (Boxer). Works Cited Boxer, Andrew. “Native Americans and the Federal Government.” History today.
